How to (really) Speak Australian

No “Fosters” does not mean “Beer”.  ”Four X” or maybe “VB” means “beer”.   Here’s some that stood out to me:

“Hey” = “Huh”

(as in:  ”Sure is hot today, hey?”  or just “hey?” if you need something repeated)

Post-Mix = Fountain Coke                           Esky = Cooler/Ice Chest

Arvo = Afternoon                                         Mackers = McDonalds

Servo = Gas Station                                     Skull = to ‘chug’ a drink

But those examples don’t begin to cover the range of things that are referred to by their first syllable and an added “-ie” sound.  Nearly everything gets this Aussie truncation.

Relatives = Rellies                                        Sunglasses = Sunnies

Magnetic Island = Maggie                           Can of Beer = Tinny

Australia = Aussie                                       University/College = Uni

Kindergarten = Kindie                                Brisbane = Brissy

I guess when it’s this hot, even two syllables is one too many.    I’ll post more another day.
